The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers (Muirfield), Scotland2013 British Open Championship Packages 5 night packages with tickets! Wednesday 17 July to Mon 22 July, 2013 Muirfield GC, more formally known as "The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers", is among the world's most private clubs and certainly the most elite of all the British Open Rota courses. Located just east of Edinburgh in beautiful East Lothian, Muirfield is easily accessed from downtown hotels in Scotland's most regal city. The British Open once again returns to Muirfield for the 142nd Open Championship July 18-21, 2013. Muirfield last hosted this great event in 2002, where the reigning 2012 Champion, Ernie Els, held on to clench the win in a nerve wrenching play-off with Thomas Levett and Australians Steve Elkington and Stuart Appleby. Of course, Els won last year too in the 2012 Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes thanks to an unfortunate finish by Adam Scott. This will be the sixteenth time that The Open has been staged at the club, which held its first Championship in 1892. Winners of previous Muirfield Opens include golf’s biggest names, Nick Faldo (1987, 1992), Tom Watson (1980), Lee Trevino (1972), Jack Nicklaus (1966) and Gary Player (1959) have all lifted the Claret Jug there over the last 50 years. Other winners include Harry Vardon (1896), James Braid (1901, 1906), Walter Hagen (1929) and Henry Cotton (1948). Special Corporate Group Offer Exclusive - download here! |

MUIRFIELD (The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers)(6,894 yards – par 71) - One of the oldest clubs in the world, dating back to 1744, and site of numerous British Open Championships (ranked #9 in The 2011 Golf Magazine World Top 100). The course has been modified frequently, and now ranks as one of the most popular Open venues, site of the Open in 1992. The active membership comes mainly from the professional circles of Edinburgh, and is very strict on outside play. Fourball matches shall not take longer than 3.5 hours, and a common game here is “Scotch Foursome” with four golfers playing 2 balls, and taking about 2.5 hours to do so! The course is best known for the constant directional changes, and the effect the wind can have on the players. One hole, the wind is at your back, the next at 90 degrees, and then the next hole it's directly in your face. Clusters of fairway bunkers, faced with turf, are a feature, and the only way out may be backwards. The rough is the highest and toughest on planet earth – by all means do what it takes to keep the ball in the fairway. There is a story of a caddy who put down the golf bag in the rough, and found the ball but then could not find the bag! The course is somewhat odd in the fact that the first nine holes encircle the back nine. The 9th hole is one of the world’s greatest, at 495 yards and par 5, heading back into the imposing clubhouse. It was designed so that the safer the drive from the tee, the harder the approach will be on your third shot. One of the true regal golf clubs of the world. WWG Grade: A+ |

Viscount Broxmouth (created 1707) is one of the additional titles of the Dukes of Roxburghe. The site was acquired by the family in 1644 and was for many years a dower house for the Roxburghe’s and the 8th Duke was born there in 1876. The house is near the historic site of the Battle of Dunbar which took place in September 1650 and was the last battle between England and Scotland. An earlier structure on the site, also known as Broxmouth House, was used by Cromwell as his battle headquarters and Cromwell’s Mount, a mound from where he commanded the battle, is in the gardens. It is said that Cromwell, watching Leslie’s army’s ill-judged descent from Doon Hill through his spyglass, exclaimed the ’Lord hath delivered them into my hands’. 3,000 Scots fell that day, including Sir William Douglas, whose gravestone still stands in the grounds. Queen Victoria visited Broxmouth in August 1878 and planted the cedar tree to the south west of the house during her stay. The iron staircase leading to the balcony of the bow fronted dining room is said to have been installed to give her private access from her room to Cromwell's mount and the grounds.
