CLUB DE GOLF VALDERRAMA
- Sotogrande
Not much introduction is needed for
Valderrama, voted Europe’s #1 course
by the PGA members, and site of the
annual Volvo Masters on the European
Tour and the 1997 Ryder Cup.
Valderrama has gained international
fame through the energy of the
founder, Jose Ortiz-Patino, who
not only insisted on making changes
to the original RT Jones Sr. layout
(notably to the 17th hole), but also
demanded exceptional standards of
course upkeep (you hardly dare take
a divot!). The strategic difficulty,
omnipresent trees, the size of the
bunkers and a few water hazards will
keep you “on your toes”. On most
holes, keep the driver in the bag
and play for the center of the
fairway, as many people can be in
the fairway and not have a shot!
Don’t bother playing to your
handicap, as even the top champions
find making par a tough task. Make
sure the visit the excellent pro
shop and restaurant too, among the
best anywhere. WWG Grade: A+
