Scottish Highlands

Overview

The Highands of Scotland are world famous for the wide open expanse and natural scenic beauty, as well as some of the best golf courses that Mother Nature ever created.  Royal Dornoch GC and Cruden Bay GC are two courses that are perennial favorites of WWG visitors.

The new Castle Stuart GC near Inverness is among the finest courses in the country, and although just a couple years old, is already a "must play" venue.  Mother Nature created the land, but Mark Parsinen and Gil Hanse molded it into a modern links worthy of the Barclays Scottish Open each July.

Most Popular Highlands Courses

ROYAL DORNOCH GC (6751 yards - par 70) - Golf dates back here to 1616, but the current layout dates back to 1886 in a design by Tom Morris, and later redesigned by local resident Donald Ross (#16 Golf Magazine World Top 100). Many consider this the best true links in the world, and guests normally rank it the best links golf experience in Scotland. Consider playing it twice!  WWG Grade A+

CASTLE STUART GC – (7007 yards – par 72) The most talked about new course in Scotland near Inverness opened in 2009, and called “the best new course in the world” by a Golf Magazine representative.  The same American owner, Mark Parsinen, who developed Kingsbarns, designed and built this links with Gil Hanse, and is now host of the Barclays Scottish Open. Castle Stuart looks like it has been there for 100 years already, and along with the great new art deco clubhouse and practice facility, is a superb addition to the Scotland golf scene.  (#56 Golf Magazine World Top 100) WWG Grade A+

CRUDEN BAY GC (6,402 yards - par 71) - Often a favorite of visitors because of the dramatic ocean front holes, Cruden Bay requires all clubs in the bag (#83 Golf Magazine World Top 100). Always one of the most popular courses on any tour, and the remoteness adds to the lore. WWG Grade: A

MORAY GC (“Lossiemouth”) (6633 Yards – par 69) - The Moray Golf Club was formed in 1889 on the southern shores of the Moray of Firth, and an excellent example of a traditional Scottish golf links. Like St Andrews or North Berwick, the course starts and finishes within the town boundaries, and form the majority of the course excellent views across the Moray of Firth prevail.  Seaside links, with gorse-lined fairways, deep revetted bunkers and grass covered dunes along coastline was designed by Tom Morris. WWG Grade: B+

NAIRN GC (6,556 yards - par 71) - One of Scotland’s best kept secrets, until the 1994 British Amateur and the 1999 Walker Cup brought the course more notoriety. Best greens in Scotland! WWG Grade A-

ROYAL ABERDEEN GC (6,604 yards - par 71) Records of golf on the links go back to 1589 but founded a couple hundred years later, the club is the sixth oldest in the world and hosted most recently the 2005 Senior British Open won by Tom Watson. WWG Grade A-
