Black Horse Golf Course - Public - $ (7009 yards, Par 72) Like its older sister course, Black Horse is also a PGA Qualifying School site, and after its renovation several years ago, many say it has become a better layout than Bayonet. A few of the holes, such as the 11th, are among the best on The Monterey Peninsula. WWG customer quote: "It's supposed to be easier than Bayonet Golf Course, but not by much. Black Horse Golf Course is real, real good!" WWG Grade: A- Carmel Valley Ranch Golf Club - Semi-private - $$ (6234 yards, par 70) Pete Dye came back to “fix” this course 15 years after its 1981 opening and it features hills, wildlife, water and Carmel River. More recent renovations completed in 2009. The tight fairways and elevation changes make it play longer than the scorecard. WWG customer quote: "Not many golf courses are as pretty as Carmel Valley Ranch." WWG Grade: B+ CordeValle Golf Club - Private - $$$ (7114 yards, par 72) RT Jones Jr. design opened in 1999 and is considered one of his best. Beautiful valley setting with vineyards and perhaps California’s most spectacular clubhouse and superb guest rooms. WWG customer quote: "CordeValle Golf Club is California's best course between The Olympic Club and Cypress Point." WWG Grade: A+
Half Moon Bay – Links Course - Resort - $$ (7117 yards par 72) Arnold Palmer first designed this course in 1973 and a recent refurbishment has brought back all the glory to include the famous 18th along the cliffs, reminiscent of Pebble Beach. WWG customer quote: "The Half Moon Bay Links Course finishing hole is worth the price of admission alone!" WWG Grade: B+
Half Moon Bay Ocean Course - Resort - $$ (6629 yards, par 72) An excellent Arthur Hills ’97 design opened with much fanfare, featuring ocean views from almost every hole and a great finish along the cliffs. Bring your camera here because the scenery is stunning. WWG customer quote: "Half Moon Bay Ocean Course is one of the most beautiful settings for golf in California!" WWG Grade: A
Laguna Seca Golf Course - Public - $ (6157 yards, par 71) Johnny Miller’s course record of 64 still stands on this Trent Jones Sr. and Jr. co-design from 1970 with many oaks and classic Jones greens. The rolling hills and trademark Jones bunkering makes it visually appealing too. WWG customer quote: "Laguna Seca is a classic Robert Trent Jones design in the warm valley." WWG Grade: B-
Links at Spanish Bay™ - Resort - $$$ - (6820 yards, par 72) Difficult links style course (146 slope) designed by RT Jones Jr. (with Sandy Tatum and Tom Watson) through the dunes of Pebble Beach. When the wind is up and the bagpipes are playing in the distance, you just may catch yourself daydreaming. WWG customer quote: "Don't compare The Links at Spanish Bay to Pebble Beach or Spyglass Hill, just enjoy it. If it was located anywhere else it would be much higher lauded." WWG Grade: A-
Old Del Monte Golf Course - Resort - $$ (6357 yards, par 72) The oldest course west of the Mississippi dates to 1897 and features some of the best putting greens on the Peninsula. A favorite of locals, “Old Del” is very playable and extremely enjoyable. Several of the holes, including the 8th, often rank in the top on the Monterey Peninsula. Pacific Grove Municipal – Public - $ (5732 yards, par 70) Classic old Muni often called “poor man’s Pebble Beach”, as many of the holes along the coastal drive with gorgeous Pacific Ocean views. WWG customer quote: "One fair nine through the forest and one very nice nine a links style along the sea." WWG Grade: B
Pasadera Country Club - Private - $$$ (6751 yards, par 71) Jack Nicklaus’ only course on Monterey Peninsula (same 142 slope as Pebble Beach) which features superb conditioning and gorgeous valley views. Six par 3’s range from 160-205 yards and will make or break your score. WWG customer quote: "Pasadera Country Club is a treat to play, but bring your A-game because scoring low here is difficult." WWG Grade: A
Pasatiempo Golf Club - Semi-private - $$ (6493 yards, par 70) Dr. Alister Mackenzie’s 1929 course has often been ranked in the world top 100 and features beautiful Santa Cruz redwoods and ocean views. WWG customer quote: "Like Alister Mackenzie designs? You'll love Pasatiempo Golf Club." WWG Grade: A
Pebble Beach Golf Links™ - Resort - $$$ (6799 yards, par 72) - America’s most famous course opened in 1919, hosted the ’72, ’82, ’92, 00 and ‘10 US Opens, ’77 PGA and three US Amateurs. Site again of the US Open in 2019 for the Pebble Beach Centennial. Annual site of the AT&T Pro Am, it is ranked #7 in the world by Golf Magazine. Poppy Hills Golf Course - Public - $$ (6822 yards, par 72) RT Jones Jr’s 1986 design traverses the Del Monte Forest pine forests and formerly co-hosted the AT&T Pro Am. A thinking-man’s course, there is little room for error or erratic, risky play. WWG customer quote: "It may not be US Open quality, but Poppy Hills Golf Course is still a very fun golf course and located anywhere else would be more appreciated." WWG Grade: A-
Quail Lodge Golf Club - Semi-private - $$ (6449 yards, par 71) Classic 1965 walk-able course situated in beautiful Carmel Valley with mountain and river views and outstanding conditioning year round. Perfect for groups and couples, this course is just pure pleasure. WWG customer quote: "Quail Lodge Golf Course is and always will be one of our favorites." WWG Grade: A-
Rancho Canada East Course - Public - $ (6109 yards, par 71) Since 1970 a popular course for locals and visitors with easy walking and plenty of challenge through the trees and along the Carmel River. A perfect course for the second round of the day. WWG customer quote: "A perfect place for an afternoon round or twilight special." WWG Grade: C+
Rancho Canada West Course - Public - $ (6349 yards, par 71) Nice public facility popular with walkers and features gorgeous tree lined fairways and shots across the Carmel River. A good test of golf, where accuracy off the tee is mandatory. WWG customer quote: "The tougher of the two scenic Rancho Canada golf courses." WWG Grade: B-
San Juan Oaks Golf Course - Public - $ (7133 yards, par 72) Fred Couples very challenging layout near San Juan Bautista is a superb value and just a short drive from Monterey. Many Peninsula residents drive the 45 minutes to the course because the value is unbeatable. WWG customer quote: "San Juan Oaks Golf Course is the best deal in the entire Monterey area." WWG Grade: A- Spyglass Hill Golf Links™ - Resort - $$$ (6855 yards, par 72) RT Jones Sr’s 1966 design visits the ocean and pine forests, co-hosts the AT&T Pro Am and is ranked by Golf Magazine (#52 in USA). Tehama Golf Club - Private - WWG Grade: A - $$$ (6457 yards, par 71) - The much publicized private club of Clint Eastwood set in the hills of Carmel Valley with spectacular views, a wonderful clubhouse and superb conditioning (Jay Moorish design). WWG customer quote: "If you can get on, you may agree that Tehama Golf Club is the best conditioned golf course you ever stepped foot upon." WWG Grade: A
