The Turnberry Resort
A Luxury Collection Property
OverviewWithin 360 acres on Scotland's west coast of Ayrshire is the Luxury Collection Turnberry Resort, a world renowned resort encompassing two fine golf courses, which underwent 10 months of extensive renovations in 2008-2009, in time for the 2009 Open Championship at Turnberry. The hotel boasts some great rooms, and many overlook the golf courses and sea (premium price), and the excellent staff is always pleasant to assist. Everything in the hotel is done with class. There are a few nice sitting rooms and lounges, the Duel In The Sun Bar, Ailsa Bar, The Spa features a pool, Jacuzzi, salon, squash, tennis courts, steam rooms, full treatment facilities, massage and more. Warning: book your massages early because the staff gets booked up! If you are staying in The Lodges, you still have access to all facilities and the staff will drive you to anything on property – just call! If time permits, try fly fishing in the private pond (huge trout!), skeet shooting, archery, or maybe off road driving all through the Outdoor Activity Centre. The golf courses are down the hill in front of the hotel, and your clubs will be stored there, or near the hotel entrance in the “golf club drying room”. The driving range (normally off mats) is in the Colin Montgomerie Links Golf Academy just to the north of the golf clubhouse. For fun, play the “wee course” in front of the hotel after dinner, or try a game of snooker! The golf clubhouse has an excellent full service locker room; pro shop and Tappie Toorie grill for lunch or casual dinner. Dinners can be taken in the grand 1906 Restaurant, The James Miller Room (formal fine dining four course menu) or the golf clubhouse Tappie Toorie (when open). The concierges are among the best in the country and can arrange almost anything. Nearby the hotel is sightseeing at beautiful Culzean Castle (pronounced "CUL-ean") and Robert Burns Cottage. Turnberry & West Coast CoursesTURNBERRY AILSA (6,848 yards - par 71) - Below the stately hotel is one of the best links in the world (pronounced “ALE-sa”) and site of many exciting Open Championships, including the Duel in the Sun (Tom Watson over Jack Nicklaus) in ’77, the Greg Norman five shot win in ’86, the Nick Price victory in ’94, and the famous Stewart Cink victory over Watson in 2009. Recent renovations to bunkers, routing and greens (#18 Golf Magazine World Top 100) are excellent upgrades. WWG Grade A+ TURNBERRY KINTYRE (6,853 yards – par 72) – The Kintyre Course uses some of the features of the original Arran layout. With some new holes along the ocean, it is a perfect complement to its more famous sister "Ailsa”, and is a qualifier course for The Open Championship. WWG Grade: A- (some carts available) WESTERN GAILES GC (6,639 yards - par 71) - Always a great test, especially when the wind blows off the ocean (hence the name) with narrow fairways. Often used as a qualifying course for the British Open, and considered as one of the three best courses in Scotland to not host “The Open” (weekday lunch included too). WWG Grade A ROYAL TROON GC (7,067 yards – par 72) - One of the most famous clubs in the world and part of the Open Championship "rota” (#48 Golf Magazine World Top 100) including the 2004 Open. Designed by Willie Fernie in 1887 and redesigned by James Braid in 1923, with the classic nine holes out and nine holes in. Green fee upgrade can include lunch in the clubhouse and a round on the Portland course. WWG Grade A- PORTLAND COURSE (6274 yards - par 71) - The adjoining Troon course, The Portland, is a deceptive companion to Royal Troon. It is a fine test of golf in the classic links manner. (included in green fee of Championship course – but most pass on playing it) WWG Grade B- OLD PRESTWICK GC (6,668 yards - par 72) - Founded in 1851 it was the original home of the first dozen British Open’s, a true links with a unique blind par three (206 yard #5). Quirky and unique, another of those “love it or hate it” courses, normally dependent on how you score! WWG Grade B+ DUNDONALD GC (7300 yards – par 72) Loch Lomond Golf Club named its new links course ‘Dundonald’. The new Kyle Phillips-designed Dundonald opened for play in 2004, and the course is operated by the Loch Lomond Golf Club management team. Hard course but a great day of links golf. (Excellent practice facility on site) WWG Grade: A- MACHRIHANISH GC (6225 yards – par 70) Machrihanish is the real jewel and one of the most traditional Scottish links ranked #92 in the world by Golf Magazine. Located about 12 miles across the sea from western Scotland on the Mull of Kintyre, adjacent to the new Machrihanish Dunes GC (they are often now confused). The first hole is a demanding 423 yard par-four, playing across the bay and beach to a wide expanse of fairway, and then on to a semi-plateau of a green. WWG Grade: A- (ferry ride from Troon) MACHRIHANISH DUNES GC (7,175 yards – par 72) Not to be confused with Machrihanish GC, Machrihanish Dunes is the new club, opened in 2008, the first 18-hole links golf course to be built on the west coast of Scotland in 100 years. “The Dunes” was designed by David McLay Kidd hard against the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, with six greens and five tees at the ocean’s edge. WWG Grade: A- (ferry ride from Troon) |
